Vassar College Nine, 1876

The Vassar College Resolute nine of 1876 followed earlier women’s baseball clubs, including the Laurels and the Abenakis of 1866. Women’s baseball went from recreation to burlesque sideshow in the 1880s and 1890s, but in 1866 Vassar student Annie Glidden wrote home: “They are getting up various clubs now for out-of-door exercise. . . . They have a floral society, boat clubs and base-ball clubs. I belong to one of the latter, and enjoy it highly, I can assure you.”
