Katherine Tingley, 1906

In a bitter struggle with the Adyar-based Theosophical Society, William Quan Judge was accused in 1895 of forging letters from the Tibetan Masters. He then led the American Section in effect to secede, but only one year after this schism in the Society he died at age forty-four. The vacuum of leadership that followed was filled, to the surprise of many, by Katherine Tingley, a relative unknown who had only recently become a Theosophist—in October 1894, after some years of social work in New York City , coupled with faith cure and clairvoyance schemes. It was at her initiative that the society relocated its headquarters from New York City to Point Loma, in San Diego County, California.
