Subterranean rabble rouser Mike Walsh
wrote in 1846: “I have a pure, natural, humane and
enlarged philosophy of my own, by which my conduct is exclusively
governed in all things, and as soon as I am Mayor, I’ll play ball in the park
[the Common Council had banned it in 1839] and have a chowder in the ‘Mayor’s
office’ every Sunday.”
