Secret History of the Early Game
This Paul Thompson portrait depicts The Little Napoleon in his glory days at the helm of the New York Giants. Forgotten by this time was his illustrious playing record as third baseman of the champion Baltimore Orioles, whom he outmaneuvered to nab a managing position in New York. The Orioles of 1902, whom he left behind to take the Giants’ offer, in 1903 became the New York club in the American League. At first known as as the Highlanders or Hilltoppers, they are today called the Yankees.
