Collier's Rooms, 1871

The big Romanesque building is Wallack's Theatre, but the gem is in the foreground: Colier’s Rooms, a saloon managed by one of Wallack’s character actors, thirty-two-year-old James W. Collier, who had only to cross the street to ply one trade or the other. It was here, on the rainy evening of March 17, 1871, that baseball’s first professional league, the National Association, was created.
