Albert Goodwill Spalding did not invent baseball but he helped to invent its inventor. He sat for this portrait by Pach Brothers in 1910, the year of his failed candidacy for U.S. Senator from California. After this defeat, he retreated from public life to complete his history of baseball, America’s National Game, and then drift into a sad final period of dementia and family conflict.
